I just read this short story and felt that I had to write a review. Not often in such a short piece of fiction do you get such detailed world building. The story is great, very high stakes for the characters. He is compelled to heal, and she is compelled to kill, putting the two characters at immediate odds with each other. Andrew lays out the tension, super-creepy dream sequences and world building in a story that is perfectly balanced and an all-around great read. My only criticism is that it was too short. I think this world that she has created and her magus-compelled characters would make a great foundation for a full-length novel.I thoroughly enjoyed this. Well-worth the time and money.

Toni does an amazing job of building a world, introducing us to two characters living in it, and showing how both characters change and grow and start to fall in love--all in the limited space of a novella.
The futuristic story should be grim; it takes place in a world at war. The two main characters are magically programmed to provide services to armies(one's a killer; the other is a healer). Their responses are beyond their control. But the magic is so clever--and Verus the doctor is so skilled--that I didn't get a chance to feel the woeful weight I usually get from those sorts of novellas.
Full disclosure I got to read this while she was writing it, so I'm not a completely disinterested reader.
